Studio Fall Recital
Grades 6 - 12

PURPOSE:
When piano students play pieces they enjoy in front of friends, family and teachers, they provide great entertainment value to the audience. However, the benefits of playing in front of others are most beneficial to the participant. Performance is the ultimate marker in the musical progression of a piano student because it gives meaning and direction of daily practice. If there are no goals, the chances of practice being established as a meaningful habit may not be realized. Below are some of the benefits of playing the piano in front of others and why piano students need to practice playing in front of others:
Having Something to Work For -
Something will change in you when you hear that you will be performing a piano piece. Apart from the sense of urgency and nervousness, there is a deadline. If you don’t know the value of a deadline, ask working people who have to deal with one almost daily. When you have a goal, routine day to day practice becomes more meaningful. The knowledge of an upcoming performance will gain a greater sense of attention to practice.
Gaining Performance Experience -
When you perform in a recital, you gain valuable performance experience. Even if it is not your dream to be a professional musician, the student will certainly gain tangible benefits that will help in their general studies such as - goal oriented discipline, self confidence, time management, peer recognition, peer motivation and building community to name a few. The only way to become familiar in the experience of a recital is to DO lots of recitals. It takes a repetition to get used to performing in a live setting. It’s not easy to perform in front of people. You need lots of practice. When you are new to recitals, performance anxiety will be the order of the day, BUT there is less anxiety when a student is in a daily routine of practice. It’s familiar and that carriers over into the performance. The more you perform in front of an audience, the easier it becomes. You learn how to play through a mistake or take a gracious bow or smile at the audience. Every performance experience is a personal gain and very valuable experience to use for future performances.
Getting Inspired by Advanced Performers -
Seeing and hearing other students in your age group have a great performance and perhaps play a piece that you would like to play one day is a motivator. Small group performances provide positive reinforcement for every student at every age and level. The student learns that with time and daily practice performances are positive reinforcement. With time and familiarity of recitals, your motivation will increase while your performance skills improve.
Gaining A Great Sense of Pride -
This is perhaps the most important benefit you will get out of recitals! You have definitely worked very hard taking lessons and faced the worst of your fears. How will you feel when the applause and smiles finally come from the audience? There is nothing better in developing intrinsic motivation and love of playing the piano than having a positive performance experience. Everyone knows intrinsically when they have done the work and had a positive experience. You will wish this magical moment lasts forever and want more! Like most students, you will feel special, accomplished, and appreciated for all your hard work. It’s a moment like this that makes it worth the effort. This is when you are likely to psyche yourself up for the next challenge. When you enjoy the recognition, you become more fearless. Your self-esteem will be boosted like never before. You will definitely look back when you are older and more successful with a smile that you were able to accept this awesome challenge.
